BRUCE LEPPER
Millbrook, ON
Working first in clay allows me to sketch three-dimensionally so that I may find that subtle turn of head or characteristic stance that defines the uniqueness of the bird, while working out design and proportion as well. At this stage also, I am researching the bird's natural environment so that both aspects of the piece are developing hand in hand. Once I have met these criteria to my satisfaction, then the actual carving of the bird and fabricating of the habitat is made that much easier. At the final painting stages is where it all comes together. Along with my background as a painter, I am able to successfully accomplish that which I set out to do with the original idea."
